lock up your daughters!

No wait? Seriously?
Fuck off!

Way to take a decent character and turn her into a prostitute.
Isn't that what this is?
Sexualizing Dora for an increase of profit...
Dora was a nice alternative to Bratz dolls...now she's almost just as bad.

I'll go ahead and blame capitalism.
This new Dora is gonna be all about shopping and make-up, which sells more products.

What else disturbs me is that this teaches children what it means to be a "girl" in this fucked up culture.
Kids learn from playing and Mattel plans on selling a Dora computer game that lets you dress and accessorize her.

This makes me really sad cause despite everything feminists are doing, this is what sells to young girls.
It scares me to think that this is what the little girls I know are looking up to and parents are buying into it.

feminst spoken word

I wanted to post these because I think they are really well done
and really entertaining. Please watch & feel free to comment.

Feminism & Pornography

Pornography: Is it empowering women or is it degrading women?

Here's a video from YouTube. The texts the protester is wearing and flashing to people include:
Make Love Not Porn.
Make 69 Not Porn.
Porn is fake - Girls are real.
Porn is RAPE - Girls are real.

Do you think that the porn industry, or the sexualization of violence in general contributes to violence against women?

Sexism in Music!!

Watch This : Riot Grrrl Vid

When reflecting on riot grrrl, Tobi Vail of Bikini Kill says:
“I thought by now there would be so many more female drummers, so many more all-woman bands, and so many more aggressive girl guitar players, and there aren't. That, to me, is really what depresses me about the whole thing”

Why do you think there are disproportinate numbers of men in music, especially in the punk scene?

Women in Advertising

This has been going on for too long....
When will advertisers stop objectifying women and find an original way to be provocative?

Any comments or similar examples?

Guerrilla Girls

The Guerrillia Girls (for those of you who are not familiar with them) are a group of anonymous feminst activists / artists fighting against sex discrimination.

This is a video I found on YouTube. It's of two Guerrilla Girls giving a great presentation about women in the arts:

I was shocked to see the negative comments this video recieved:
Eckerson posted, "complain to everyone who agrees with you already, sure to make you feel better about a frivelous cause"
SteveGlaze7 writes, "feminist=dyke"
You can check out more yourself if you'd like.

What do you think about the negative reactions and stereotypes feminists continue to receive?
Do you agree with 'eckerson' that their cause is frivolous?

Cyberfeminism

For my final Visual Culture project I decided to create a cyberfeminist art blog. The purpose of this blog is to create an online space that draws attention to feminist issues and initiates an active discourse.
